Mongolia, Gobi Desert and Khyargas Lakes, 19 days

Mongolia is one of the more remarkable places in the world to drive. It is the most sparsely populated country on earth, which is another way of saying it is largely unspoiled, and there are no fences or restrictions on where you can go.

The contrast in country is what makes it. Rolling green steppe and lakes in the north, then the Gobi in the south with 12,000 foot ranges and sand dunes over 1,000 feet high. It is the only place we know of where a 4WD convoy can travel side by side on multi tracked routes rather than in single file.

Nights are in ger camps. This is a nineteen day expedition and, like all our international trips, it takes a great deal of planning.

A day on the trip

Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazaryn Chuluu

This is an excerpt from day two of the itinerary, to give you a sense of how the days run. The route follows Highway 272 due south from Ulaanbaatar for around 200km, then turns west for a 60km off road run to the ger camp at Baga Gazaryn Chuluu. About 260km all up.

It is a pretty spot, green valleys among unusual rock outcrops in Delgertsogt sum, Dundgovi province, surrounded by plain. The highest outcrop is a granite stone mountain 15km long and 10km wide, 1,768 metres above sea level. There are more than twenty kinds of medicinal herbs growing there, and marmot, ibex and mountain sheep about, so once we are acquainted with our first ger we head out and explore.

Dinner and breakfast are at the central restaurant building by the camp entrance. There is a sheltered outdoor area beside it where pre dinner drinks and a debrief on the first days work go down well.

Common questions

About the Mongolia expedition

How long is the Mongolia trip?

Nineteen days.

Where does it go?

North through the steppe and lake country, then south into the Gobi Desert, taking in the Khyargas Lakes. The base at either end is Ulaanbaatar.

What is the driving like?

Largely off road, on multi tracked routes rather than formed roads. Because there are no fences or access restrictions, a convoy can travel side by side rather than nose to tail, which is unusual anywhere else in the world.

Where do you stay?

Ger camps, the traditional Mongolian felt tent. Meals are generally taken at a central restaurant building within the camp.

What is the country like?

Rolling green steppe and numerous lakes in the north. In the south, the Gobi, with mountain ranges to 12,000 feet and sand dunes over 1,000 feet high.
