Guided multi day four wheel drive tours through the South Island

4WD tours New Zealand

Our New Zealand 4WD tour itineraries

Looking for a guided 4WD tour in New Zealand? We run four multi day four wheel drive tours through the South Island, each covering a different part of the island. All of them cross private high country stations under crossing agreements, which is what opens up tracks the public cannot get to.

Every trip works the same way. You drive your own 4WD in a small convoy, there is radio contact between vehicles, and Steve leads. Trip fees include motel type accommodation, evening meals with the team, your guide, station crossing fees and prizegiving on the last night.

The season runs February to April. Bookings are taken all year round and trips generally fill well in advance.

Common questions

New Zealand 4WD tour questions

Which tour should I choose?

Muzzle Station is the flagship and the most remote. Canterbury to Southland covers the most ground and the highest tracks. All New Southland has the widest variety of country, from Fiordland to the Catlins coast. D’Urville Island to Hawea is the only one that starts on an island.

Do I need my own 4WD?

Yes. You drive your own vehicle as part of a small convoy, with radio contact between vehicles.

When does the season run?

February to April. Bookings are taken all year round and trips are often booked well ahead.

What is included in the trip fee?

Motel type accommodation, evening meals with the team, your guide for the trip, station crossing fees and prizegiving.

What does high country station access mean?

We hold crossing agreements with the stations we travel through, which is why the group size stays small. Those tracks are not open to the public.

Do you run tours outside New Zealand?

Yes. See the international tours, which cover Mongolia, Patagonia, the Himalayas, Africa and the Simpson Desert.
