Simpson Desert 4WD safari

NZ 4×4 Treks goes to the Simpson Desert, in the dead centre of Australia. There are 1,100 sand dunes to cross and they are the longest dunes in the world, some running up to 200km. You join our Australian guide for this one.

The eleven day Aussie Icons trek takes in Birdsville, the Simpson, William Creek, the Oodnadatta Track, Marree, the Birdsville Track, Innamincka and the Dig Tree, among others.

We have taken the hassle and the uncertainty out of organising a trip like this, and the risk of doing it on your own. Your guide leads remote tours for a living and is a qualified four wheel driving instructor, so even if you have never driven the outback you get coached along the way. You come away with 4WD skills that last.

The route

Big Red, the Simpson and Lake Eyre

We start at Windorah where the sealed roads run out, and head for Birdsville, the most iconic outback town there is, and Big Red, the most notorious sand dune in the country. That is where the sand driving master class happens.

After two nights in Birdsville we go south along the Birdsville Track, then pick up some of the lesser travelled desert tracks and spend four nights crossing the Simpson.

Coming out at Dalhousie Springs we follow the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks around Lake Eyre. There is an option to take a scenic flight over the lake from William Creek. Then a night at Innamincka, a visit to the Dig Tree, and east through Noccundra to finish back on the seal at Cunnamulla.

A marked tree at Innamincka connected with the Burke and Wills expedition. We visit it after the night at Innamincka, on the way east to Noccundra.
